Applebee's Is Great Food, But Not Answer to Winning in '08
MSNBC - Is Democrats solution on the menu at Applebees?: "The leadership of our party has a cultural disconnect, Sosnik said. Our leaders particularly Washington, D.C.-based dont really have the same life, day to day, as all those people out there in those red states. We dont eat at the same restaurants. I dont know how many politicians in town that are leaders of our party who voluntarily go to Applebees, unless its for work. You look at the swing voters out there, what their sporting events are, the music they listen to, the celebrities, the television programs, its just not what the East Coast leadership (watches) its not quite where we are.
'Talk about Applebee's, we don't even go to the Cracker Barrels and the Dennys as well,' added Donna Brazile, who served as Al Gore's campaign manager in 2000.
Sosnik said, We cant figure out a better way to sell to those people weve got to be more like them. Being more like them requires finding Democratic leaders from small-town and rural America. "
I realize that liberals are crying aloud in their sleep, why, why, why. I understand that they think they are smarter than everyone, and many of them are very, very smart. While this man's concept was in the right direction, I would like to hone his thought. He is trying to say that they need someone that normal folk can relate to, but they really need someone who actually is relateable.
He wants someone who has normal friends who are not Washington insiders. They should have had buffalo wings and a beer at a local restaurant like Applebee's with friends from high school. They should have volunteered at the local schools or hospitals or interned for a county judge. Democrats are often big city people, and it seems obvious that, at least for the time being, they may want a liberal redneck. As someone who worked for Applebee's in college in fly-over country, I understand his point and would remind him that it is not about getting someone to go to Applebee's, but rather someone who was genuinely that type before.
